亀塚古墳の説明
狛江古墳群は、古墳時代中期にあたる5世紀頃から6世紀半にかけて、数多くの古墳を築造された古群です。これまでに約70基ほどの古墳を確認されており、多摩川中流域において展開した古墳文化を考える際に貴重な古墳群です。
狛江古墳群に残された古墳は、規模の違いはありますが、そのほとんどが円墳です。そのなかでも亀塚古墳は、唯一の帆立具型前方後円墳であり、その特微的な能織や大きさなどから.古くから注目されてきた古墳です。
江戸戸時代の後開、文政3年(1820)に定成した「武政名器区会」という江戸近節の名所を楽内する語物では、和泉村に大小9ヶ所の「古塚」が残されており、そのうちのひとつが 「亀塚」という名で解介されています。江戸時代にはすでに、この古墳が「亀塚」の名前で地域の人々から親しまれていたと言われています。
